CPP-Fundamental Factor for Stability and Progress of the Cambodian Nation

Cambodia has gone through, about half a century now, various turns and hardships in different historical stages until it reaches the current stage of peace, national reconciliation, democracy and development. Facing with the fact that it evolved from being controlled by foreign nations to gaining its freedom, and from gaining independence and peace to being in a full-blown war and ferocious genocide, Cambodia lost pride and superiority, whereas its people almost vanish from the world. In these difficult circumstances the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) always fulfilled its role as the most important political force for independence, peace, freedom, democracy, neutrality and progress for its nation and people.

CPP, originally known to be the Khmer Revolutionary Party, was founded on June 28, 1951 on the basis of people’s struggle for national independence. Under the Party’s leadership, the movement made great contribution to a great victory in the struggle for national independence from the colonialism in 1953. After winning independence, the Party embarked on a wide range of political activities aimed at defending the state of independence and neutrality of Cambodia against foreign interference, while raising high rights and freedom, democracy and livelihood of the people. However, peace that was always under threat in those days was brought to an end by the coup on March 18, 1970 that plunged Cambodia into flame of war and furthered into genocide fabricated by Pol Pot after coming into war on April 17, 1975.

In that critical circumstance, the Cambodian People’s Party was the only political force that stood up and mobilized people throughout the country to fight and topple the regime, and won the victory on January 7, 1979. The January 7 victory has ushered in a new life for every Cambodian and brought about essential conditions for national restoration and defense from the state of devastation. Along with its success in preventing the return of the genocidal regime, gradually the country’s socioeconomic conditions have been restored, while people’s livelihood stabilized. It is on the basis of national progress, the Cambodian People’s Party urged for a search for peace and national reconciliation, because of which a whole political settlement by the Paris international conference in 1991 brought about another new phase in the Cambodian history and that is peace, national reconciliation, democracy and development.

Almost two last decades under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, the Cambodian people tread energetically on a correct path and created various major achievements in various fields. The war has been brought to an end while peace reigns fully and throughout the country from late 1998 thanks to the win-win policy of Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia. The country’s socio-economic fields assume speedy progress that steadily betters the people’s living condition. Roads, bridges, hydraulic systems, schools, hospitals, Buddhist pagodas have grown throughout the country. Also our prides are growths of light and heavy industry, electricity, skyscrapers, drinking water systems and investments. In the same instance, the country has achieved a strong national defense infrastructure, whereas its sovereignty and territorial integrity have been firmly safeguarded and national prestige has been raised in the international arena.

As a whole, under the leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, our fatherland has stepped out of an abyss of devastation and shamefulness while turning the country into a land of peace, stability, raising high rights and freedom and human dignity, whereby people have access to education, healthcare and harmonious family lives in the community and in the whole country. On this basis we could affirm with pride that our nation is strengthening and expanding its march to a stage of forceful development in the spirit of confidence and mastering its own destiny.

Major and historic achievements have clearly reflected the correct leadership of the Cambodian People’s Party, for which the three Samdech Akka Moha serve as guidance, wisdom, and intelligence, but also as the sole and centre of the Party’s solidarity. It is true that the CPP, while negotiating turning points and hardships, has always been attacked from various ill-intention circles whose aims have always been to do away the CPP’s political life. They seek every means to cause division within the Party, twist the truth on the Party’s tradition while provoking a detrimental relation between the Party and people.

However, their attempts could not progress into achievement because the Cambodian People’s Party and the Cambodian people are one, where people’s aspirations are the Party’s objectives and people’s hardships are the Party’s charges. History has had a say already about this reality.
